Saving our planet

Upcycled Hair Clips

Do you think or worry about our planets' health and the climate change issues being faced today? Have you thought about ways and changes you can make in your day to help, or have you already but maybe wonder if there's more you can do?

I think it's safe to say, there's always something more we can all do, ourselves included! So here's some random tips on how you can play a key role in creating that positive impact.

Food

Buy locally sourced foods

Buying local means you are already disrupting the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the transportation of goods. Head to your local greengrocers or butcher where you can guarantee there'll be less chemical rubbish in the food, you're then also supporting local UK based businesses, AND you'll be reducing emissions along the way.

Eat more vegetables

We are by no means saying go vegan (we tried it ourselves for 3 years but that's another story for another day), however what we are saying is if you marginally reduce your red meat consumption, this will have a massive impact on climate change. Sadly cows produce large amounts of methane which is more dangerous to our planet than CO2, and from what we understand, the amounts produced even trump (excuse the pun...) the greenhouse gases produced by the entire global transport industry... that's INSANE!

So by aiming to reduce your red meat consumption, you will help to reduce the demand for this product, reduce the amount of cows being farmed and reduce the greenhouse gas production.

Look for sustainable items

Whether that's buying upcycled jewellery like we create at Kaykins Creation, finding upcycled furniture for your homes, or heading to a car boot to buy second hand rather than brand new. All of this helps to again disrupt the large scale manufacturing processes due to many being large greenhouse gases polluters, particularly made worse by the fact that many are based overseas. In turn this reduces the amount of discarded waste which let's face it, most of us don't actually witness what really happens to it or where it even ends up. Some corporations at face value might be good at making out like they have valid sustainable processes in place but delve a bit deeper and it can simply be a disguise. Do your homework.

Recycle as MUCH as possible

Make sure to recycle as much as your council allows you to in your recycling boxes thus reducing what ends up in landfill. There is still a staggeringly large amount of waste that ends up in landfill that could have been recycled, which is frightening in this current day and age. The more we recycle, the better. If you're unsure of what can or can't be included, check your councils' website.

Additionally, have a look what other items in the house you frequently buy and throw away to see if there's recycling options available. Examples include:

Coffee pods for coffee machines have various recycling options available. Costa for example have their own scheme for their branded pods, you just need to pickup a bag for free from one of their stores, and start collecting. Once you've filled your bag, you take it back to one of their stores and request a new one. Lots of other brands like Nespresso and Aldi have also signed up to a pod recycling scheme too, just check it out online.

Electric toothbrush heads

There's additionally many schemes available for recycling toothbrush heads, just have a google!

Shops

Additionally, the retail stores are improving their facilities. Sainsbury's for example offers Soft Plastic recycling, just collect and take your soft plastics to their recycling bin in store. Boots also offers a money back recycling scheme too where you can get vouchers for recycling! Check out the Boots website for more details!

Garden

Do you have a garden? Plant some more bee friendly plants. Without our bees we will simply not survive.

And how about trying to grow your own fruit and veg? If you're not sure you're much of a gardener, start with the basics/easy to look after produce and see how you get on. We've recently purchased some dwarf fruit trees to try and star being more self-sufficient and sustainable, can't wait to see how they grow!

The more of us that get involved, even with the smallest of changes, the bigger our impact will be. It's easy to think that why would one person make any difference, but if EVERY person on the planet thought that and then chose to do something about it, imagine how much of a positive impact we would have collectively created ❤️
